My friend walked into the dimly lit anteroom. A book with a very strange title appeared in his hand. He said “This is what you were looking for. I am sorry that I had only the paperback version to give because you will read it many times. Take good care of it and it will serve you well.”
He was dead right. I took the book from him and thanked him sincerely. It was exactly what I was looking for. I wondered how it was that he knew. I left the hall and drove straight home, arriving about 10:00 pm. I thumbed through the first page or two thinking I would just scan the beginning to pick it up later.
Wrong. I couldn’t put it down. It was riveting. I read the entire night through to the end of the 337 pages. I was exhausted but went to work the next day living in an altered reality, a new truth to guide the understanding of my life experience, so far and perhaps in the future.
My friend? Ron Moss.
The strange title of the book? “Occult Science, an Outline” by Rudolf Steiner.
It changed my life from how I looked at and acted with the world and myself, from before to after.
It was only later that I discovered that my friend Ron was a member of a society with another strange name, The Anthroposophical Society in America. I knew with certainty that I needed to join that society and within a few days petitioned to join with my friend Ron as my sponsor as was the custom in those days. In March of 1983 I received my membership card signed by someone named Henry Barnes.
I actively engaged in the life of the society, attending study groups, lectures, performances, helped to form a branch, petitioned to join the school for spiritual science as a student. Throughout I made many close friends with whom I feel a special connection. I read, read and re-read my growing collection of books, periodicals and lectures. For me, reading was my anchor and the perfect path to follow on my journey through spiritual science. My life was immeasurably richer with each reading, conversation, initiative, presentation and friendship.
The veins of spiritual wealth showed themselves greater the further I pursued them. I was introduced to a series of plays written and produced by Rudolf Steiner commonly referred to as the Mystery Dramas.
In 1995 as fate would have it I learned of a professional theater company that planned to bring a performance of one of the mystery dramas in English to nearby Burnaby, British Columbia. The name of the troupe was Portal Productions and they produced an English version of “The Soul’s Awakening”, the fourth drama written by Rudolf Steiner. The producer and one of the Eurythmists was Marke Levene.
A group of friends that I had been studying with all agreed that we should go together. We made it an overnight adventure with a carpool caravan, meals and hotels overnight, thoroughly enjoying ourselves.
The highlight of the trip was unquestionably the performance itself. The staging, the lights, costumes, sound were all that one could expect from a professionally produced drama. From the opening scene we were drawn in by the sense experience. The effect on everyone was so different from any other performance or viewing because of the knowledge underlying the interaction of the characters. It was definitely not your average entertainment of the present age.
Exactly what made this drama and performance different from anything else? The decades of study together came to life in front of us.
Reading “Occult Science, an Outline” changed my life but experiencing “The Soul’s Awakening” gave me fresh, new life and a deeper understanding of my own life’s purpose.
Some of the friends in our group had little prior contact with spiritual science and I know that watching the drama unfold enkindled a resolve to discover more.
To hear what others experienced in their attendance either at a drama or a eurythmy performance produced by Marke and his associates have a listen to these other friends: John Beck, Claudia Fontana, Gertrude Hughes and John Barnes.
The fact is that over his lifetime Marke has produced and toured performances that have touched the lives of tens of thousands of people. You may already have experienced performances produced by non-professional companies or individuals but efforts using paid professionals makes a difference.
Rudolf Steiner was able to complete only four dramatic productions from 1910 through 1913 due to the advent of the “War to End All Wars”. After decades of study, production and presentation of these dramas Marke Levene had an imaginative experience giving him a picture of what the next continuation of the story would look like. Working with playwright, Michael Hedley Burton, they and others have completed several drafts of a script for the play. It is currently entitled “The Working of the Spirit”.
Marke plans to visit the Puget Sound area from March 21-27 to meet with individuals and groups to talk about the story of the development of this work of art, how it is being produced and plans for a world wide tour in 2017. Works of this magnitude and quality do not just appear from the heavens. It requires determined, coordinated effort of hundreds of people over years and substantial contributions to bring it into being.
The opportunity to meet with someone of Marke’s experience and stature is rare. His trip here represents an opportunity to see if we can bring the drama to the area, what opportunities there are for individuals to work creatively with him and what such an event might mean to the creation of locally produced works of art inspired by spiritual science.
If you wish to meet with Marke individually or help arrange a group meeting in your community my contact information is:
I am also looking for someone to help as a paid assistant to coordinate Marke’s schedule starting as soon as possible.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. Bye for now.
